Every unit  in our block has a milk box – a hole in the wall with a door on either end.  How can they be a fire hazard? Or security problem?

I suppose it depends on the doors – are they fire rated?

But what’s the problem here?  Is your strata committee trying to get rid of them, using fire safety and security as an excuse?

I can hear in my mind “ be careful what you wish for”

These old blocks were built to different fire regulations. It’s not required to upgrade these buildings to the current regulations, unless ordered by the local council. Most of these buildings don’t need annual fire inspections.

I think that once you start the “ upgrade” process, every owners pet project will become a security or fire risk.
That may cost the OC a lot of unwanted expense in the long run.

If there are people lobbying to get the milk boxes removed, just say that it’s a cosmetic renovation, which is probably the real reason anyway.

There’s not much detail but I sense the OP is against the removal of the milk boxes.

Who gets milk (or bread) delivered these days?

Some people still get newspapers delivered and, in these plague-ridden times aren’t milk boxes a brilliant way  of getting your Ubereats, pizzas and other takeaways delivered without having to encounter the delivery person?  A case of “back to the future”, methinks.

We have receiving boxes on the landing area of the stairs in our block of units – three side-by-side on each level. Perhaps it requires someone with artistic flair to turn the boxes into something interesting. This is a link to a concept in Seattle which may be an interesting use for the boxes
